Is Bollywood picking its friends selfishly

Does friendship have any value in Bollywood, or is it just a way to get ahead

They have been immortalized on screen: whether romancing each other, making unbreakable friendship vows or declaring they wont rest until they have killed the other. Off-screen, of course, is a different story. Or is it?

In the glittering world of Bollywood, things are constantly changing. Relationships change from cold to warm and vise versa in a matter of seconds. One can never believe a star when he or she claims to have made friends; indeed, even claims to have made an enemy. This is because, let’s face it: it could be a publicity stunt or the star or director could have vested interests when declaring someone is his or her friend or enemy’.

While stars spar over the smallest issues one minute, they are burying the hatchet and hugging the next. Either a long spat, like in the case of superstars Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan’s 6 year long cold war is lifted quite publicly at a party, or else things just cool off or one of them swallows his or her pride and takes the initiative, like in the case of Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan.

We examine 7 relationships between celebrities that were sweet, turned sour and then remained sour or became sweet again; proving that friends may come and go, but interests are the driving force behind relationshipsin Bollywood.

Shahrukh Khan and Farah Khan

They might have been making headlines for the release of Happy New Year, but this movie has revealed a darker side to SRK and Farah’s relationship that has not been discussed.

In 2010, Farah chose Akshay Kumar and not Shahrukh for the lead in Tees Maar Khan, souring her relationship with the Badshah of Bollywood. Therefore, SRK took his revenge on the director by cribbing about the Happy New Year script when he was cast in the lead way back in 2010, so that he could complete Ra.One (2011) and Don 2 (2011) comfortably.

Sanjay Dutt and Sanjay Gupta

The duo that gave us hits like Kaante, Zinda, Shootout at Wadala, Dus Kahaniyaan, Khauff, Jung, Plan and many more enjoyed a friendship of more than 20 years. But the pair turned foes. It started with the joint venture between the two Sanjays, called White Feather Films. Sometime in the middle, Dutt came to know that the employees weren’t being paid regularly. Dutt was furious and blamed Gupta for it, also quitting his film, Alibaugh, which remains incomplete to this day. Gupta, for his part swore never to work with Dutt again. The two had also made some rude comments about each other.

In 2012, Sanjay Dutt reached out to Gupta at Big B’s birthday party and the two having resolved differences, are friends once again. Gupta even stalled the launch of the song Laila from SAW because he was disturbed over Dutt’s jail sentence.

Salman Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Salman Khan gifted Sanjay Leela Bhansali a DVD of Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige. This was the inspiration for Guzaarish (2010). However, instead of casting Salman in the film, SLB decided to go for Hrithik Roshan instead, which irked Salman; who publicly commented that the film would not even be watched by a dog. Their relationship had further been soured when Sanjay took Aishwarya Rai’s side when she and Salman broke up. The current status is that though the director has reportedly cooled down and is ready to forgive the actor, Salman is still fuming.

Shahrukh Khan and Shirish Khunder

Twitter is great for so many things. Including it seems brawls. In 2011, Shirish wrote “I just heard a 150 crore firework fizzle” after watching Ra.One. This lead to a brawl later at Sanjay Dutt’s party. Intoxicated, Shirish insulted SRK and earned a slap and punch in return.

Shahrukh and Shirish are said to have mended fences over lunch with the help of Sajid Khan and Sajid Nadidwala. Shirish says the fight only made their relationship stronger.

Aishwarya Rai and Shahrukh Khan

Way back in 2003, during the filming of Chalte Chalte, Shahrukh Khan was unhappy with Salman Khan’s regular visits on the sets to meet his then girlfriend, Aishwarya Rai. It became too much for King Khan when Salman physically assaulted Ash; and he made the decision to replace her with Rani Mukerji!

In 2009, at Karan Johar’s party, he apologized, with Aishwarya Rai accepting gracefully. The couple of SRK-Gauri and Aishwarya and Abhishek headed over to party  at Mannat.

Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor

In 2002, the Bachchans and Kapoors                                   began a long family feud ensuing from son Abhishek’s broken engagement with Karishma, continuing even after the point where Abhishek was married to Aishwarya Rai.

In that same 2009 birthday party of Karan Johar, the two feuding families began to thaw towards each other, thanks to bahu Ash and KJO. The family feud had ended, and Abhishek danced with Kareena and even greeted his ex.

Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan

The leads of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, and Ishq had an cold war which lasted for almost five years.

We learnt on Koffee With Karan that Juhi’s co-star’s prank on the sets of Ishq had irritated her. As a result, she did not go on set the next day, causing the shoot to be cancelled. This irritated Aamir in turn. However, after years of silence, Juhi scheduled a meeting with Aamir, where the two cleared the air and resolved their differences.

Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan

What lit the fires of fury was Shahrukh Khan refusing a cameo performance in Salman Khans brother Sohail Khan’s filmMain Aur Mrs.Khanna’. So, in 2008 at Katrina Kaifs party, Salman took it out on SRK. The Dabang star compared his showDus Ka Dum’ with ShahrukhsKya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain?’ and claimed that while his was a success, SRKs had flopped. This casual cajoling turned ugly and turned into a fight, with SRK taunting Salman about his ex-girlfriend, Aishwarya Rai.

The Happy New Year star even apologized to Salman on Karan Johar’s Koffee with Karan, which didnt move Salman, who said it should have been done privately. However, the two broke their 6 year long spat at a party hosted by Baba Siddique recently.

So there you have it, Btowns celebs and their relationships. We dont know which ones are genuine and which ones are just a tribute to a piece of off-screen acting, but we know this for sure…the next big fight is sure to come sooner than later.
