PK seems to have all the things that make a film a great watch
Aamir Khan’s favourite holiday for movie releases is here! Attempting to maintain his winning streak with end-of-the-year releases like 3 Idiots, Ghajini and Dhoom 3; the superstar’s next release PK, will be out on the 19th of this month. With the traditional formula still intact till now, Aamir’s only film of 2014, PK by Rajkumar Hirani will be out in theatres soon.
With recent films like Happy New Year, Kill Dil and Action Jackson receiving mixed reviews from critics and cinegoers, we wonder if PK will be able to match up or exceed expectations of Bollywood movie lovers this Christmas.
The TAARE ZAMEEN PAR star has been known to be a perfectionist and dole out films that are more or less always good. With the recent boost to his career when his 2013 film Dhoom 3 won the highest grossing foreign film award in Australia recently, Aamir Khan could once again make us believe in the power and purpose of cinema despite the other great disappointing flicks that have hit theatres recently.
PK has reunited the terrific trio of Aamir Khan, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and director and co-producer Rajkumar Hirani after their 2009 film 3 Idiots. The film’s marketing team also adopted a unique sans-television approach to promote the film, adopting a more long-term approach to remind audiences about PK without being overbearing about it.
Beginning with the first poster, which featured Amir Khan in the nude with only a transistor radio covering his private parts, the film made its intentions clear: it was all set to grab eyeballs.
Starring superstar Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Anushka Sharma, the film has managed to maintain a less is more approach by attracting intrigue by the audience but still keeping the elements of the film secret, according to director Hirani.
The film certainly has all the ingredients of a good film: a good hero backed up by rather popular secondary characters, a powerful production trio of Rajkumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Siddharth Roy Kapur as well as the merry festival of Christmas to ensure those eyeballs are free to see the film. Add to that that the film is not rivalled by another release until January 9th next year, when debutant director Amit Ravindernath Sharma will release Tevar, and we are more certain of a super hit.
Add to the mix the fact that the film has a great storyline and is based on a brand new concept and we are more and more certain of the film’s success.
In the movie, Aamir plays Punmiya Kushal aka PK. He is a happy-go-lucky guy who brings his alternative, innocent, child-like thinking to the lives of others in his city. This brings a paradigm shift in the thinking of people who for years have been set in their own ways. This alternative point of view, in turn earns PK some friends and some enemies. The film is about life, laughter and saying goodbye. It explores human relationships from the unlikeliest of places.
Most encouraging is Aamir Khan’s own point of view. In late October, Aamir told the media that his role as PK was the best experience till date in his more than 25 year long career.
For us, the film ticks all the boxes that ensure the film reaches the 100 crore mark. To read about what the ingredients for a 100 crore masaladar film are, click here.
