Haider and Bang Bang : Connection and Comparison
Haider and Bang Bang will hit the silver screens on October 2. The two films are expected to do well, not just because it’s a festive time; but also because it is one of the longest weekends of the year.
Lets discuss details about these much anticipated movies. Both are the most awaited movies of the year. As Bang Bang is the remake of the Hollywood film Knight and Day and the movie also brings the superhit on-screen pair- Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif. Whereas the successful duo – Vishal Bharadwaj and Shahid Kapoor are all set to strike gold again after they worked wonders in ‘Kaminey’.
As trade experts say, it is “unfair” to compare the two. Because Hrithik Roshan’s Bang Bang and Shahid Kapoor’s Haider are two different genres of movies. Additionally, the directors of both the movies have a diverse approach to storytelling.
Sidharth Anand, the director of the Bang Bang makes big budget and mass entertainment movies. His movies as a director include Ta Ra Rum Pum, Salaam Namaste, Anjaana Anjaani and Bachna Ae Haseeno. Vishal Bhardwaj has achieved mastery for adapting Shakespeare’s classics on silver screen in a realistic manner like Macbeth as ‘Maqbool’, Othello as ‘Omkara’ and now he has adapted Hamlet as “Haider”. Vishal’s movies may not get box-office success but they always collect accolades from critics.
Both the directors last movies didn’t do well at the box-office. Sidharth Anand’s last movie was Anjaana Anjani and Vishal’s Dedh Ishqiya failed to impress the Indian audience. Both of them need their respective movie to do well to hold their name as successful director.
Bang Bang is an action thriller movie which has exciting water action sequences. Hrithik Roshan became the first actor to do a flyboarding stunt in a film. Shot in Abu Dhabi and India, ‘Bang Bang!’ has used F1 cars which has not been done in any Bollywood movie till date. Bang Bang promises to give the audience never-before watched action sequences. Bang Bang has been shot in exotic locales like Greece, Abu Dhabi and Bangkok. Whereas Haider is a modern-day adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It focuses on revenge and rebels which leads to destruction.
Even the starcast of the movies can’t be compared. Haider has the veteran-like Kay Kay Menon and Tabu. Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha are the new on-screen pair which makes the movie more exciting. Both of them have proved that they could act. Shraddha Kapoor has also sung a Kashmiri folk song in the movie along with Suresh Wadkar. But Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif are popular as Bollywood stars instead of actors. Katrina Kaif is one of the leading ladies of Bollywood and Hrithik Roshan has a huge fan base.
Dismissing the comparisons, trade analyst Rajesh Thadani said to IBN, “Hrithik is altogether in a different league, so let’s not compare them. Their budgets and costing are also different, so there is no space for comparison. Also, ‘Bang Bang!’ will have more screens compared to ‘Haider’, so let’s not compare,” he added.
The budgets of the movies are different which implies their expected box-office collection would be different. Vishal Bhardwaj told IANS, “‘Bang Bang!’ is said to be a Rs.180 crore film, ours is a Rs.24 crore film. Of course, they would need more money to break even, we would need lesser.”
Top production house like UTV and FOX Star Studios are backing Haider and Bang Bang respectively. Therefore, they will make sure that the two films get enough number of screens to release. So, both the movies will do well.
Both the movie caters to different audience base. So, Haider and Bang Bang have equal chances of doing well.
