Synopsis:
A Decent Arrangement is a modern day dramady exploring ethnic identity and the impact on choices due to globalisation. The film follows a wandering Indian-American called Ashok Khosla. An aimless copywriter, he comes to India looking for what he thinks will be an emotionally uncomplicated arranged marriage.
Preeti, his cousin well-intentionally bosses him around and pushes him to meet several potential matches. Unfortunately for Ashok, there is too much of a cultural gap between these women and he cannot connect with them.
An American, Laurie is a woman travelling through India on a whim. A chance meeting between Ashok and her forces Ashok to think differently about his choices and situation.
Ashok meanwhile, is being paired up with Amita, an Indian woman. Traditional but modern in her own way, Ashok notices that her struggle is not so different from his own and finds his attraction to her growing.
As the movie progresses, we see Ashok growing closer to his Indian family. He begins to examine his situation as an Indian-American and thinks deeply about the logic of settling for this convenient arrangement–both individually as well as socially.
Ashok’s parents arrive to finalize details of his arranged marriage. This acts as a catalyst, setting certain events in motion, hence, forcing Ashok to make this important decision.
