A lot of talent from Punjab is tickling the funny bones of TV viewers and stand-up comedian-actress Bharti Singh loves the fact that people from her state are high on humour.
A trendsetter herself, the 28-year-old’s observation comes from the fact that she has teamed up with Punjabi artistes Krushna Abhishek and Sudesh Lehri in the new “Comedy Classes” sitcom.
“I am from Punjab. We speak so much Punjabi on the set that it feels like shooting in Jalandhar or Ludhiana. Punjabis are blessed. There are so many Punjabi comedians…even Kapil Sharma…” Bharti told told IANS.
“So, now if we return to our hometown, perhaps comedy will come to a halt in Mumbai. I really like it when people say that Punjabis make people laugh,” added Bharti, who has no qualms about laughing on herself, especially her weight.
Best known as the child character named Lalli, she hasn’t had enough of comedy.
“I am not bored of doing comedy. Who gets bored of eating food? I want to stay as a comedian and always be fat.
“The audience also says don’t lose weight. People still think of me as the child Lalli. Even handsome guys pull my cheeks and call me sweet and cute,” she said.
After completing about five years in the industry, she has become one of the most loved comedians. But it wasn’t cakewalk for her.
“There aren’t too many successful female stand-up comedians. So, sometimes people even change date or offer as much money I ask,” said the trendsetter.
“Earlier, there used to be problems. Now, people tell me that I’ve changed mentality of others and it’s good,” added the comedian, who rose to fame with “The Great Indian Laughter Challenge” show.
Apart from comedy, she loves putting on her dancing shoes.
“Punjabis are famous for eating and dancing. We love dancing. We can even dance when someone honks,” said Bharti, who had participated in the celebrity dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa”.
What about marriage plans?
“I would like to concentrate on my work for at least three more years and then will think about marriage. Bidai mai bhi nachna hai,” she said.
