Varsham
In what will be deemed to be one of the best performances of his life, Mammootty carries this film from the beginning to the end with consistency and confidence, never breaking out of character or appearing unconvincing even once. The other actors appear mediocre in comparison.
Asha Sharath is okay but despite being the female lead, seems to appear insubstantial when compared to Mammootty. While we might be convinced by the performance of the protagonist’s son, Prajwal Prasad and doctor Jayshree played by Mamtha Mohandas, T.G.Ravi doesn’t snugly fit into the shoes of a villain and The performances of Sajitha Madathil and Sunil Sukhada are wooden.
Using the melodrama of films from the 70s and 80s, this film uses cliché tear jerking family drama to tug at every Malayali’s heartstrings. Still, though the film is certainly not original, it does manage to capture the essence it seeks to portray.
A hardnosed businessman who isn’t too hung up on such things like ethics and morality when it comes to money, Venugopal (Mammootty) owns a local finance company. His wife, Nandini (Asha Sarath) is a stereotypical housewife: always worried about gossip, jealous and whiny; the two continuously fight, but what unites the couple is their teenage son, Anand (Prajwal Prasad), who they push to become a doctor.
A tragedy brings Venugopal and his wife’s life to a standstill. The pain of parents is clearly depicted by the couple quite convincingly, even disturbingly so. This is where Mammootty manages to shine the most.
After the grieving process is completed, Venu begins the journey from self centeredness to selflessness. He changes is philosophy on life and begins a more philanthropist approach to his company, naming it after his son. This makes him popular and the other financiers jealous. Venu takes on Peter played by T.G.Ravi and others.
Director Ranjith Sankar is known to always carry a social message in his movies. through Varsham, he has taken up the cry against the media-termed ‘blade banks’ or non-banking financial companies, a.k.a moneylenders who charge such high interest rates, it leads families to commit suicide.
One might complain about the lack of originality of the plot and that it tries to do too much in one movie. However, some great acting and overall good direction has put Varsham into the category of good movies.
